To make it easier to find the FAQs relevant to you, we’ve carved them into six categories corresponding with the How it works page. Sizing, Choosing, Leasing, Enjoying, Exchanging, Recycling.
Any other questions? As KBX is a new initiative we welcome any questions that haven’t been covered here. Send yours to email@example.com
Q: Why is sizing important?
A: We wouldn't dream of riding a bike that was the wrong size, certainly not for very long.
So why should our kids? For them, just as for us, having the right-sized bike is beneficial for all kinds of reasons: health, safety and simple enjoyment of cycling. (We wouldn’t encourage any child to try wheelies on the wrong-sized bike.)
Q: How do I figure out the right size?
The place to start is to measure the rider’s inside leg because of how this corresponds to the saddle height. That’s why it’s so important to measure your child before you start looking at the bikes. See how to measure here.
Q: How do the KBX sizes work?
A: We have six KBX sizes which we feel is a simpler system than ‘the usual’.
Most kids' bikes are sized according to the size of the wheel – 12 inch, 14 inch and so on. And yet this says very little about the size of the actual bike, ie the frame. Some manufacturers produce different sized bikes, with the same sized wheel, which can become very confusing. At KBX, to simplify things, we’ve measured each bike according to the frame and have allocated it a size accordingly.
|Inside leg range||Size||Approximate age|
|30cm - 41cm||KBX 1|
|40cm - 51cm||KBX 2||4-5 years|
|50cm - 61cm||KBX 3||5-6 years|
|56cm - 67cm||KBX 4||6-7 years|
|60cm - 71cm||KBX 5||7-9 years|
|70cm - 83cm||KBX 6||10-12 years|
To see how these sizes tally with ‘bike industry’ wheel sizes, see our Size Checker here.
Q: How much does it cost?
The cost of a 12-month lease depends on the bike size; the table here shows all prices:
|Size||Annual lease price|
|KBX 1 (balance)||£55|
Q: What is the £30 joining fee?
A: This is a one-off fee and carries over from one bike to the next. It contributes to the support we give you for the duration of your time with KBX, and allows us to keep the annual leasing fees at the rate they are.
Q: My child has a bike which is now too small, how can I start exchanging straight away?
A: To check that your bike is one that we would want to add to our fleet please email a photo to firstname.lastname@example.org. If it is ‘one of ours’ * we will offer you a price. Once agreed you can order your first KBX bike. Please bring your exchange bike with you when you collect your leased bike and we will pay you for it then.
Our brands of choice include Cube, Dawes, Frog, Giant, Isla, Merida, Raleigh, Ridgeback, Scott, Specialized and Trek.
Q: Why do I need to sign a lease?
A: Instead of buying a new bike, you are simply borrowing one of ours for a year. Because the bike remains ours for the duration of that period, there has to be an agreement between us which spells out what we can and can't do, and what you can and can't do. It’s very similar to when you lease or hire a car.
Q: What if I want to end my lease early?
A: You are free to do this, of course. If you are ending early because your kid has grown and needs a bigger bike from us, we will happily refund whatever is remaining on your old lease once you start a new one. If you are not starting a new lease then we will not be able to refund any amount when ending your lease early.
Q: What if my child still fits the bike after 1 year?
A: You are welcome to extend that lease or to start a new one with a new bike.
Q: I live miles away from Twickenham. Can you deliver my bike to me?
At the moment, we don't have a delivery service set up, so this would be very expensive. At present we ask our customers to collect their bike from our workshop in Twickenham, where we will also fit the bike. We hope to have a delivery service in place in the future so watch this space.
Q: What if my bike is stolen?
A: If you lock your bike in a garage or shed when at home, and you lock it up with a decent lock when you are out and about, this is unlikely. However, sadly it can happen. You should contact us straightaway and let us know. We will then happily replace the bike with one of the same size for the remainder of your lease. The total you will need to pay for your stolen bike is the same as you paid for your original lease. Ie. if you have a size 4 bike, you will pay us £85.
Q: What if my bike is damaged or in an accident?
A: Just as if it was your own bike, you will be expected to pay for the damaged part which we will source and fit for you, for a small labour charge. If the bike is irreparable then we would replace the bike with one of the same size for the remainder of your lease. The total you will need to pay for your damaged bike is the same as you paid for your original lease. Ie. if you have a size 4 bike, you will pay us £85.
Q: What if my bike needs a service?
A: If your bike needs a service whilst you are mid-lease, you can bring the bike to us and we will service the bike and simply charge you for the labour.
Q: How do you define ‘wear and tear’?
A: Technically this is damage that occurs naturally and inevitably as a result of normal use of the bike. Practically we expect tyres, brake pads and gear parts to experience wear over the duration of your lease and you will not be penalised for this.
Q: What if I want don't want to exchange for the next size up because I already have a bike of that size?
A: You are under no obligation to continue to lease a bike from us when you come to the end of a lease. Simply return your KBX bike at the end of the lease. We would, of course, welcome you back with open arms if you wanted to rejoin us for your next bike.
Q: Can my KBX bike get passed to my younger child?
A: Of course! We would want to ensure that it was the right size for your younger child and we would give the bike a full service, replace any worn parts and ask you to sign a new lease for that bike.
Q: Where do you buy your bikes?
A: Our bikes are bought from friends and friends of friends, from second-hand websites such as ebay & Gumtree, and some of them are new bought directly from manufacturers.
Q: What sort of bikes are in your fleet?
A: All our bikes are premium brand, light weight bikes with good, reliable components such as gears, brakes and pedals. We will not lease a steel-frame bike as we believe these are too heavy, nor will we lease catalogue ‘build from a box’ bikes. Our brands of choice include Cube, Dawes, Frog, Giant, Isla, Merida, Raleigh, Ridgeback, Scott, Specialized and Trek.
Q: How long do you keep your bikes and what happens when you're done with them?
A: We will evaluate every bike when it is returned to us after a year's lease. If we don't believe we can bring it back to the standard a KBX customer would expect, we will take it out of service. But this is not the end of its life, as we will then give it to a charity so it can go on being ridden.
